Welcome To Primary 6H

This term our 'World Around Us' topic is all about keeping healthy. A lovely lady called Fiona from the 'Hope Centre' in Ballymena came for three Wednesdays to talk to us about the dangers of drugs.

In the first week we found out all about the different types of drugs that are available. We learnt about Speed, cocaine, alchohol, tobacco and even caffeine. We all gave Mrs. Humphrey such a hard time about her caffeine addiction that she is now drinking caffeine-free  tea, coffee and Diet Coke!

In week 2 we all found out about the dangers of tobacco to your health. She showed us the 'Tar Jar' which had the tar which would collect in a smoker's lungs in a year - it was disgusting! Do you know that you will spend over £2000 a year on cigarettes if you buy one pack each day! That would buy almost 17 D.S. Lites!

In the last week we found out about the dangers of too much alcohol. Did you know that alcohol can affect your liver, brain and heart. The footballer George Best had to have a liver transplant because he was addicted to alcohol and it destroyed his liver.

Fiona brougt in the drug box for us to look at it. We were all fooled, we thought they were real drugs, but they were only fake. Drugs can be inhaled, injected, smoked and taken into the body in many different ways. It was frightening to see so many types of drugs.

We also had the chance to wear 'beer' googles. When you put these on, the wearer reacts as if they were drunk. We all had a go and found it really hard to walk along the line!

To celebrate 'World Book Day', Primary 6 did lots of activities. We reviewed our current class novels, made book marks, used clay to create our favourite novel character.

We also took photgraphs of ourselves reading in some very strange places!
