All About the Buick Memorial Primary School

Our school was built in 1900; it is located in the centre of our village at the cost of £1899. This building replaced the old National School, which had been founded in 1819. Following the death in 1904 of Dr. G. R. Buick, the Minister of the Cuningham Memorial Presbyterian Church, the school was named ‘ Buick Memorial Public Elementary School’ in recognition of the fact that Dr. Buick donated much of the money for the building.

Much has changed since Dr. Buick’s days; Cullybackey is a large, growing village. Our pupils are drawn from public and private sector housing developments and for those living in outlying areas, transport is available.
The school is well maintained, comprising of 14 classrooms, a separate Nursery Unit, equipped for 26 pre-school pupils, a large well-equipped PE/assembly hall, dining, a well-stocked library, a Music room and a networked ICT suite.

Arthur Cottage, Ancestral Home of Chester Alan Arthur, 21st President of the United States of America commands a spectacular view of the rich agricultural land around Cullybackey.

Our school uniform is rather unique! Pupils wear a brown sweatshirt with a yellow polo shirt. Brown trousers, skirt or jogging bottoms are worn. Our badge denotes the school and the church and an open book.

We have a formal uniform consisting of a cream shirt and brown and yellow tie, which is worn at concerts, services and when we represent the school.

There is always something going on in our school. We are all kept very busy.  After school clubs include netball, choir, drama, Scripture Union, orchestra, tennis and Computer Club.

In May 2008 we were awarded our third Eco award. We now proudly fly our Eco flag after many months of hard work.
