Welcome to Buick Memorial Primary School & Nursery Unit

Yesterday, Wednesday 17th December, was our Christmas Lunch, where we had over 280 pupils and staff enjoying a fantastic meal made by our great kitchen team.

Well done to everyone who performed at our Carol Service on Tuesday 16th December.  Thank you to all the parents, friends and family members who came along to support us!

DVDs (£2) and CDs (£1) of the service are available from the school office.

Christmas Pantomime Trip – Jack & The Beanstalk - Friday 19th December

We will be leaving school at 9:15 a.m. and returning at approximately 12:00 p.m.

As there will be 7 buses returning the pupils to school at this time, would parents in cars please try and avoid the area until just before 12:30 p.m.  This will ease potential traffic problems.  Thank you.

Pupils are not permitted to bring sweets, snacks or drinks (any medical exceptions to this must be put in writing to the class teacher) – a good breakfast is recommended.

Parents of pupils not attending the pantomime should make alternative arrangements on this day, as there will be nobody in school to supervise children.  Thank you.

Last Day of Term is Friday 19th December

School will close at 12:30 p.m. There will be no school lunches on this day.

Bus children will leave at approximately 12:20 p.m. on a bus from the front of school and village children and those going home by car will be released at 12:30 p.m.

SCHOOL BUDGET CONCERN!  - SEE BUICK NEWS FOR MORE INFORMATION.

The Department of Education for Northern Ireland (DENI) has recently released for public consultation the proposed education budget for 2015-2016.

If you have been following the news, you will be aware that all Northern Ireland government departments are facing major cutbacks.

The DENI’s schools’ budget is facing major reductions – the main school budget faces an 8.4% cut – a serious figure.

The DENI have put the budget out for public consultation until 29th December 2014.  The document is available on www.deni.gov.uk (click on web address to access) and can be viewed and/or downloaded.  It is vital all schools and parents respond.

The NEELB held emergency seminars for principals this week and informed us the effects the cuts will have at primary and post primary school level.  It is reckoned a minimum of 1000 teaching jobs and 1500 non-teaching jobs will go across Northern Ireland.

When the budget is broken down to school level, the ‘front line services’ that Education Minster, John O’Dowd, claims to want to protect, it is estimated by the NEELB’s finance department, that for each 50 pupils, each school will lose approximately £9000 of its budget.

For Buick Memorial, that means we will lose somewhere in the region of £60000!!!!!

This will have a serious effect on our class sizes and school structure (as it will for all other schools) and hence pupils’ education.

I would ask all parents to respond to this draft budget consultation.  On Monday I will put further information to help parents on the school’s website and make paper copies available from the school office.  The money in education is not spread equally, and schools like ours suffer more than others, something else that has to be factored in.  While all schools will lose out, some will lose more than others!

If you have any queries, please speak to me as soon as possible.  Please respond to this draft document as the proposed cuts will have serious implications for your child’s future education, whether in primary or post-primary school.

Thank you, R White.
